Symptoms of Dehydration
Dehydration and weight gain symptoms in women
Below are a few of the subtle signs and symptoms of dehydration. Do any of these describe you? - Are you feeling tired, sluggish and fatigued?
- Does your mind get foggy sometimes – you can’t concentrate or focus?
- Are you retaining water or carrying around uncomfortable water weight?
- Are you constantly struggling to lose stubborn belly fat with little or no results?
- Do you suffer from constipation and other digestive disorders?
- Do your joints feel stiff?
More often than not (even when we’re diligently following healthy diet plans), we may feel this way, but often we’ll blame these obvious signs of dehydration on outside influences. Things like….I’m not getting enough sleep or food or I'm skipping too many meals, or too much stress or...…fill in the blank…. Granted, some may actually apply. For example, a diet plan that’s too low in calories or eliminates an entire set of macronutrients can definitely cause some of the symptoms I’ve just described. You should always check with your doctor or health care practitioner if you're not sure! Assuming we’re all following healthy diet plans and not the “crazy-fad-diet-to-lose-belly-fat-of-the-week”, then the first rule of thumb should be to rule out “dehydration” first.
These are some of the longer term effects of Dehydration…
Dehydration Effects - Weight Loss
Dehydration and weight gain - dehydration actually causes weight gain! You read that right. Weight gain is one of the symptoms of dehydration most women don't even know about! Dehydration effects (it slows down) your body’s ability to burn fat. If you’re constantly struggling to lose even the tiniest amount of body fat, then NEVER allow yourself to become dehydrated! This holds especially true if you’re being active or exercising. If the kidneys are deprived of water, their ability to purify blood efficiently is affected. When the kidneys become stressed, the liver (whose job is also to support kidney function), becomes stressed as well. The liver, whose function is to convert stored fat to energy, can’t metabolize fat as quickly or efficiently either. Plus it now has the added stress of having to support poorly functioning kidneys….. The result is a state of dehydration. Your body is now forced to conserve its precious water supply by slowing down metabolism. How counter-productive is that?
Here’s an important and timely article from Aquasana about the symptoms of dehydration and the importance of staying hydrated.
Dehydration Effects - Aging
Dehydration effects your skin’s elasticity and water content. It promotes premature aging of the skin (and the body) and encourages more wrinkles and fine lines to appear. Picture a grape shriveling up into a raisin…get the idea?
Dehydration Effects - Detoxification
Dehydration prevents toxins from being flushed out of the body. Your body will store toxins in fat cells and hold on to them. Water helps flush these toxins out. The signs and symptoms of dehydration go far beyond what I’ve described here (I'm focusing only on the symptoms of dehydration as it applies to weight loss here) so again I must stress that’s important to check with your doctor or health care practitioner when you’re not sure. Ignoring the signs and symptoms of dehydration over many years eventually leads to chronic health problems and disease. By simply drinking more water throughout the day and staying hydrated you can avoid many of the effects and symptoms of dehydration completely – without diet pills, weight loss surgeries or fad diets.
