Overweight and Obesity Effects
4 Compelling Reasons to Lose Belly Fat
Overweight and obesity effects on women, men and children alike have reached epidemic proportions in our society!
They include heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and has even been implicated in breast cancer for women. Below is an overview of the more common “obesity diseases” we keep hearing about but there are actually over 30 diseases and symptoms associated with being overweight and obesity. Lose belly fat (the most dangerous kind of fat) and work towards staying within healthy
Body Mass Index (BMI)
levels. It can make a huge difference in avoiding overweight and obesity effects and diseases down the road.
Did You Know?: “Medical problems caused 62% of all personal bankruptcies filed in the U.S. in 2007, according to a study by Harvard researchers. And in a finding that surprised even the researchers, 78% of those filers had medical insurance at the start of their illness, including 60.3% who had private coverage, not Medicare or Medicaid.” (Source - Business Week) |
Overweight and Obesity Effects # 1 - Diabetes
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey states that two thirds of adult men and women in the U.S. alone who were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes have a
body mass index (BMI)
of 27 or higher, which is classified as overweight. Obesity diminishes insulin’s ability to control blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes typically develops when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin in the blood or you've become
insulin resistant.
It then begins to overproduce insulin in an attempt to regulate blood sugar levels until eventually it’s no longer able to keep blood sugar levels balanced. Interestingly, new research shows that
bariatric weight loss surgery
can sometimes reverse Type 2 diabetes and that obese women who have had bariatric surgery also experience a 42% decrease in the risk of developing cancer.
Overweight and Obesity Effects # 2 - Hypertension
Having excess belly fat increases your risk of developing hypertension or high blood pressure tenfold. That in turn significantly increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.
Overweight and Obesity Effects # 3 - Heart Disease
Heart disease is probably the most widely known “obesity disease”. Excess amounts of body fat wreak havoc on blood lipid levels. When blood lipid levels increase, triglycerides and “LDL” or “bad cholesterol” increase as well. This causes “HDL” or “good cholesterol” to decrease in the blood. The result is heart disease: heart attack, angina, abnormal heart rhythm and even kidney failure.
Last, but certainly NOT Least # 4 - Cancer
Estrogen is produced by fat cells. It's also the hormone that fuels the growth of most common breast tumors. Often, women who have breast cancer are advised to avoid gaining any excess body fat (which increases the amount of fat cells) in order to help to lower their estrogen levels. Overweight and obesity effects touch a large percentage of our population indeed. Just think of the people you know personally or have heard about who are struggling with one or more of these obesity diseases in your own life. I hope you’ll use this information in a positive way as it isn’t meant to be a “scare you skinny” tactic. Moreover it's my hope that it will serve as additional motivation to lose belly fat.
