Green Tea For Weight Loss

Green Tea Can Help Reduce Belly Fat!

The results of a recent green tea research study at Tuft University concluded that moderately active women who drink the equivalent of six cups of green tea a day lost twice the weight and an incredible 25 times more belly fat than women who drank only caffeinated diet sodas!

The definition of ‘moderately active’ was a 25 minute daily regimen of moderately intense exercise like walking or biking.

There’s been a surge in green tea research these past few years and as a result green tea products and brands have migrated from the health food stores and are now appearing on the grocery store shelves everywhere.

I’ve been doing some of my own research on green tea for weight loss and here is a short list of the many green tea benefits.

Green Tea for Weight Loss

Green tea helps to increase metabolism naturally by raising dopamine levels – which means that it can increase calorie burning by about 4%.

It contains catechins (EGCG) and caffeine (another natural metabolism booster), compounds that are thermogenic – in other words, they create heat in the body.

Some experts aren’t impressed and have argued that the fat burning effects (a measly 4%) of this weight loss tea are insignificant, but consider this:

To put that into perspective, just four cups of green tea has been shown to burn about 80 more calories per day.

Burning an additional 80 calories per day is equivalent to 2,400 calories per month and over the course of a year that’s enough calories burned to shed almost 8 pounds a year without changing anything else in your diet or activity level!

Not bad, I say!

If it’s a choice between drinking empty calorie products like sugary sodas or diet soda sweetened with artificial sweeteners and green tea products like a zero-calorie glass of ice cold steeped green tea with a lemon wedge, I’d say it’s a no brainer!

Polyphenols in Green Tea Act Like Fat Blockers

The polyphenols in green tea can actually help reduce the absorption of dietary fat by up to 40%. They interfere with the production of digestive enzymes that are needed by the body to break down fat.

Green Tea Helps Reduce Deadly Abdominal Fat.

A study in the journal In Vivo found that switching from coffee to green tea reduced women’s’ visceral fat by 76% in four months!

Visceral fat can significantly increase your risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Green Tea and Hormones

A UK study showed that drinking green tea daily may also reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone that’s known to encourage fat storage.

Catechins help to improve insulin levels as well. Insulin is the hormone that’s strongly linked to excess belly fat.

Green Tea Reduces Food Cravings

There’s also evidence that it helps to improve the functioning of leptin (an anti-hunger hormone) so it can help you to reduce food cravings and even take the edge of your appetite.

Other Green Tea Benefits – There’s So Much More!

It contains flavonoids and polyphenols, powerful antioxidants found in its leaves that can actually stop the growth of cancer cells. In fact, the antioxidants found in green tea have been shown to be as powerful as those found in fruits and vegetables.

A USDA study showed that drinking 4-6 cups daily can reduce bad cholesterol by 11%.

A Dutch study showed green tea can lower your risk of heart disease by an amazing 69%.

Regular green tea drinkers reduce their risk of heart disease by 31% and are 42% less likely to suffer a stroke. The antioxidants found in green tea products protect your heart by relaxing the blood vessels so that your blood pressure is regulated.

The stress releasing amino acid, L-theanine (and caffeine) has been found to both relax you, yet keep you mentally alert and able to focus. That’s a great state of mind to be in for the constant problem solving we do throughout the day.


Green Tea for Weight Loss Tips:

  • * Add a squeeze of lemon, eat a few grapefruit or orange slices or chew a 500 mg. Vitamin C tablet (they taste like tart candies) with your tea. It will help your body absorb more catechins and boost the fat burning effect of your weight loss tea.

  • * Carry a few tea bags with you in a small plastic ziplock bag to enjoy throughout the day. Just add water and your good to go!

  • * I usually drink several cups in the evening when I find I’m more susceptible to snacking – it really helps curb food cravings.


Enjoy it anytime throughout the day….it’s calorie free but does contain natural caffeine, although you can purchase decaf green tea products as well if caffeine gives you the jitters. Salada and Lipton green tea brands are also available in decaf I’m told.

Drink it plain as part of your daily water intake when you’re craving a hot drink.

Better still, brew 8 to 10 cups and refrigerate it to drink cold along with your daily intake of water.
