Foods That Speed Metabolism Up

Foods that speed up metabolism for women over 40

Here’s the best 6 foods that speed metabolism up naturally and kick start your fat burning efforts.

You'll definitely want to incorporate these fat burning foods into your daily weight loss diet menu – they’re the best metabolism boosting foods to help kick start a sluggish or slow metabolism!

Burning calories creates ‘heat’ in the body. That ‘heat’ is what is referred to as metabolism. Your metabolism is responsible for converting food into energy.

As you age, especially after 40, your hormones will begin to fluctuate and weight loss metabolism tends to slow down as a result.

Add to that the fact that you also begin to lose muscle mass (about ½ pound per year) and you can see how easy it is to store more body fat as the years go by.

With your lean muscle mass slowly declining, it now takes fewer calories to maintain your present weight as well, so you want to make your calories really count!

One of the best ways to increase metabolism is to replace your empty calories and less efficient fuel foods (most processed foods would fall into this category) with metabolism boosting foods like these.

These types of foods increase metabolism naturally!

Foods That Speed Metabolism Up - High Protein Foods

The best breakfast to kick-start metabolism should contain high protein foods.

Eating high protein foods is one of the best ways to increase metabolism...just ask the body builders out there who drink whey protein shakes every morning!

Protein helps to raise metabolism throughout the day and night – yes, that means that you’re burning calories even while you sleep!

Don't you just love that?

Metabolism boosting foods break down slowly in the body (keeping you feeling fuller longer) and more ‘energy’ (thermic response) is produced just to digest them.

The result?

Your body will burn almost twice the amount of calories digesting protein as opposed to carbohydrates or fat!

In fact, when you compare a high protein meal to a high carbohydrate meal, the thermic response from a high protein meal can be up to 40% greater!

High protein foods, especially when eaten for breakfast, will kick start your metabolism immediately and keep it humming all day.

If you REALLY want to burn bellyfat fast, here’s a list of high protein foods to get you started and help speed metabolism up considerably without dieting!

Foods That Speed Metabolism Up - High Fiber Foods

Experts suggest that to be healthy we need 24 to 38 grams of dietary fiber daily.

Here in North America we get an average of only 10 grams of dietary fiber daily – that’s less than half the optimum. In fact studies show only about 5% of the population eats the recommended amount of dietary fiber daily.

Sticking to high fiber, complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables and fruits keeps insulin levels steady, and discourages fat storage.

High fiber breakfast cereals are now being marketed to the masses as a great way to get the recommended amount of fiber and complex carbohydrates we need daily...but be careful when choosing!

Some packaged cereals can be loaded with sugar and salt, so read food labels and choose very carefully.

If breakfast cereal is 'your thing' (it's fast and easy) I suggest your look for cereals that are both high in dietary fiber and high in protein. Look for and choose one that contains at least 7 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber per serving.

Two cereals that I personally know of that fit that criteria as of this writing are:

  • Kashi GoLean Cereal ® with 13 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber and 140 calories per serving.
  • Kellogg’s All–Bran Original ® with 8 grams of protein, 20 grams of fiber and 160 calories per serving.

Personally, I prefer a hot bowl of steel cut oatmeal topped with blueberries or other berries or fruits. I used to hate oatmeal, but then I experimented a little and found that by adding berries or fruit and a half scoop of vanilla flavored whey protein – well, it’s now one of my favorites!

I usually cook enough for 2 or 3 servings then divide it into portions and ‘heat and eat’ for several days so it’s fast and easy. I add the whey protein and berries or fruit just before serving and voila!

Personally, I find it to be the best breakfast to kickstart metabolism for me as I’m not a fan of cold cereals.

Foods That Speed Metabolism Up - Low Glycemic Index Carbohydrates

Low glycemic index carbohydrates are also known as excellent foods that speed metabolism because of their minimal effect on blood sugar.

In a nutshell, ALL carbohydrates are converted to sugar (glucose) in the body, but simple, processed or starchy carbohydrates convert to sugar much quicker than complex carbohydrates do and they create huge surges of insulin release.

High levels of insulin running amiss end up being stored as fat and create food cravings, so high glycemic index foods (simple, processed, starchy carbohydrates) are not the way to go if you’re trying to reduce belly fat.

Low glycemic index, complex carbohydrates are typically high fiber foods. High fiber foods help to stabilize blood sugar and keep you feeling full longer. They also give you more energy.

The answer, however isn’t to eliminate carbohydrates altogether (some carbs are actually good for you) but to choose low glycemic index, high fiber complex carbohydrates and whole grains over simple, processed carbohydrates.

That’s a mouth full, I know!

Tips to Speed Up Metabolism: Apart from being great foods that speed metabolism up, low glycemic index foods, high fiber complex carbohydrates, high protein foods and omega 3 fatty acids are all foods that have been shown to boost brain health too!

Low glycemic index foods that are high in dietary fiber (complex carbohydrates) include whole grains and cereals, fruits and most vegetables – see the glycemic index list of foods below.

Choose low glycemic index foods most of the time and medium glycemic index carbohydrates in moderation.

Foods That Speed Metabolism Up - Resistant Starch

Resistant starch found in beans and cooked whole grains (brown rice, pearl barley, and bulgur) can help raise metabolism and increase the ability to burn fat by 20-25 %.

To a lesser degree (about 5%) resistant starch can also be found in starchy vegetables that have been allowed to cool – cold mashed potatoes is a good example.

Studies have shown that when resistant starch is eaten at breakfast, the fat-burning effects will continue throughout the day.

Although I’m not suggesting that you eat cold mashed potatoes for breakfast, a half cup of beans included with your morning eggs or a bean salad with lunch would be a good high protein, resistant starch food choice.

We all have to make choices (good or bad) as to the type of foods we eat daily, so why not incorporate some of these healthy, natural foods that speed metabolism up into your daily weight loss diet menu?
